Brisbane Showdown: Must-See Matchups in PBR Origin 2

Brisbane Showdown: Must-See Matchups in PBR Origin 2

Game 2 of the 2025 PBR Origin series gets underway in Brisbane tonight and the riders have a serious challenge ahead with a stacked pen of bulls.

By Josh Hanson

As a group, the cowboys of the Monster Energy Tour rode very well throughout May. They produced riding percentages above the season average at Origin I in Newcastle and the Sydney Meatstock Touring Pro.

Standing in their way in Brisbane tonight is a tough pen of bulls that contains eight of this season’s top eleven-ranked bulls in PBR Australia competition. There are some nice chances for both teams littered through the draw, but momentum will be hard to build, and I expect it will be a grind for both teams.

Here are some of the key long-round matchups:

Round 1

Clint Glass (NSW) on 134 Thickshake (MC Bucking Bulls)
Glass looks to be in good form. He has an event win and two top-5 placings from his last three starts and he faces Thickshake early in the opening round. This matchup looks like a nice opportunity for the Willow Tree bull rider to get his team on the board. The bull has been ridden twice from eight trips, and the latest of those scores went to Sam Woodall at Meatstock in Sydney a few weeks back. He usually tries to get the rider out of position with a fake as he leaves the chutes and can turn back in either direction.

Ben Bode (QLD) on 025 Haymaker (MC Bucking Bulls)
This is a rematch from Origin I, where Bode and Haymaker combined for 82.75 points in the second round of competition. The Calliope young gun wasn’t travelling the best before that ride, but he appears to be getting the train back on the track. In his career, this bull has been ridden in 33.33% of his trips. He prefers to turn back to the left, and two of the three scores recorded belong to left-handed riders. I am expecting to see a repeat of that qualified ride in Newcastle.

Matheus Lima Rodrigues (NSW) on 811 Tezzas Pride (JD Bucking Bulls)
Rodrigues has recorded three straight top-5 finishes on tour. All three rides during that stretch have been into the Brazilian’s left riding hand, and he gets another bull that fits that mould here. Eight of the nine qualified rides recorded aboard Tezzas Pride have gone to lefties with an average score in the 83-point range. We haven’t seen much of this bull on tour in the past twelve months, but I think we can trust his pattern here. Zane Hall owns the last qualified ride, and that was at Caboolture in 2024.

Jack Keats (QLD) on 054 Twist & Shout (Dunne Bulls)
The Cloncurry talent has been riding well at the limited events he has entered so far this season. He has covered over 40% of his bulls, and it doesn't matter which way they turn back. Both qualified rides recorded aboard Twist & Shout in his sixteen-trip career have gone the way of right-handed cowboys for 87.50 and 87.00 points. The bull does turn back to the right almost exclusively, which will give Keats a great chance at posting a solid score into his hand in what looks to be a tricky round.

Round 2

Thomas Triplett (QLD) on 818 Cover Up (CF7 Bucking Bulls)
Cover Up has been ridden eight times in his career for scores averaging 85.44 points. He produces quite a consistent trip, faking to the right before turning back to the left. Right-handed riders have done well aboard him despite the anticlockwise spin, with four righties making the whistle. Things didn’t go the way of the Bungundarra young gun at the Sydney Meatstock event as he battled with a hand injury sustained in Newcastle. I expect Triplett to bounce back in a big way here.

Kurt Shephard (QLD) on 011E Alpha Blokes Warden (MJ and Keliher Bucking Bulls)
The No. 1 ranked bull rider in the 2025 PBR Australia National Standings against the No. 1 ranked bull on the 2025 PBR Australia Monster Energy Tour.

Alpha Blokes Warden is unridden so far in his career, having beaten twenty-one straight riders, and he has averaged a bull score of 43.71 points so far in 2025. He is powerful, moves quickly and kicks the lights out. Shephard, too, is in excellent form. He enters Origin II off the back of a 2-for-3 performance in Newcastle, which boosted his season riding percentage to 52.55%. Seven of his eight qualified rides this season have been good enough to pick up the round win, and he has been getting the job done in either direction. The Warden will turn back to the left and into the Mareeba cowboy’s wheelhouse. This should be a great matchup!

Luan Crystian Camara (NSW) on 060 Evolution (ST Bucking Bulls)
Camara has been the hottest rider on tour over the past month, riding five of his last six bulls to pick up event wins in Origin I at Newcastle and at Meatstock in Sydney to jump into second place in the National Standings. Evolution has been a tricky draw for most cowboys, with just one qualified ride recorded from thirteen trips. They have switched up the delivery for this bull a few times, but from the left chutes, he favours a clockwise spin. The Brazilian talent has been dynamite riding into his hand, and he gets another chance to utilise all his power here.

Dylan Weir (NSW) on Little Scar Maker (ST Bucking Bulls)
Little Scar Maker looks to be one of the more rider-friendly bulls in this round. So far, Caiden Sandilands is the rider to reach the bell, but buck-off times for the other cowboys are deep into the 8 seconds. In his previous trips, he has faked or spun once to the left before finishing to the right. That finish should suit Weir. If he can handle the bull’s tricks in the opening stages of the ride, it looks like a good opportunity for the Tumut bull rider to contribute to his team’s total after he was shut out at Origin I.

Rylee Ward (QLD) on Turbo (ST Bucking Bulls)
It looks like a tough night on paper for Ward, but he has been riding well since arriving back on Australian soil, and his confidence will be growing. He went 2-for-3 at Rockhampton before bucking off both of his bulls in Newcastle. The New Zealand talent then rebounded strongly in Sydney, going 3-for-3 across the weekend to finish runner-up. Turbo has been covered twice in the past twelve months, and the average buck-off time for the five unsuccessful cowboys sits at 6.51 seconds. He will likely turn back to the left, and despite that being away from Ward’s riding hand, I think they can combine for a qualified ride.

Diego Galdino (NSW) on 165 Buckle Up (BK Bucking Bulls)
The popular Brazilian cowboy has been working hard in the practice pen after a few rough months on tour, and that effort should pay off here against Buckle Up. This bull has made just three trips on the Monster Energy Tour, and he has been ridden twice. Both of those scores belong to left-handed riders, with Caiden Sandilands the most recent of those, scoring 84 points last year in Maryborough. This bull does prefer to turn back to the left, which will be into Galdino's hand.

Zane Hall (QLD) on 220 Bad Apple (Ruhland Ranch Bucking Bulls)
Hall is another rider who has been performing below expectations so far this season, but he finished the Sydney Meatstock with a confidence-building ride. He posted one of the highest scores of the weekend in Round 3 to share in the prize money. I think he will be familiar with Bad Apple and will go into this matchup confident that he can make the whistle. This bull was ridden for 80 points by Dan Ruhland at Tamworth late last season. He will fake to the left before turning back to the right and away from the Athol bull rider’s hand.

Jack Brodrick (NSW) on 319 Wild Force (Ruhland Ranch Bucking Bulls)
The Bungendore cowboy is also struggling for consistency, but he should be confident heading into this matchup with Wild Force. This bull has been ridden 50% of the time in PBR competition, and five of those six scores belong to left-handed riders. That is surprising, considering the bull prefers to spin to the right. Brodrick will be the final rider for New South Wales in the long rounds, so the result of this ride may impact not just the makeup of the Bonus Round but also the Blue's chances of levelling the series.
